LIVE UPDATES: Ongoing Screening Of Commisisoner-Nominees By Oyo Assembly Members

Commissioner-nominees are already seated, waiting to be screened by members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Akinloye Yusuf Akinloye reports for OYO INSIGHT.
This newspaper recalls that Governor Seyi Makinde had forwarded names of 14 nominees to the legislative house.
A former speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Kehinde Ayoola; former chairman of Ibadan North West local government, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun as well as 32-year old Barr. Seun Ashamu and others are already seated in one of the commitee rooms of the Assembly.Ayoola, who was the first to be screened, represented Oyo East/West state constituency between 1999 and 2003. In line with section 102 of the Nigeria constitution, he was asked to take a ‘bow and go’ after presenting himself.

Like Ayoola, Barr Adeniyi Farinto, who was chairman of Iwajowa local government between 2007 and 2011 and later represented Iwajowa state constituency between 2011 and 2015, was also asked to take a ‘bow and go’.

This was after Farintó was asked what would likely be his contribution to the judicial arm of the government by the deputy speaker but was countered by the minority leader, Hon. Asimiyu Alarape. Alarape had said that, Farinto should be accorded the privilege to take his bow and go, being a former member of the Assembly. He cited the same section of the constitution as in the case of Rt. Hon. Kehinde Ayoola. And the motion was seconded.

Hon. Funmilayo Okikiolu Orisabiyi being a former member of the house, was also asked to take a bow.

Hon. Ojekunle Jacob Ojemuyiwa is also a former member of the House of Assembly. Just like the trio who came before him, he was accorded the same privilege, to take his bow and go.

Chief Bayo Lawal, after presenting himself to the house, was eulogized by the two lawmakers from Ibadan North East, and was to take a bow.

Dr. Bashir Abiodun Bello, was the next to present himself to the house. He was also asked to take a bow and go. But it wasn’t before he was asked questions relating to primary health cares, tradomedical, rises in maternal death and other health sectors problem.

After Prof Oyelowo Oyewo  presented himself to the house. Hon. Olawumi Bimbo, eulogized Governor Seyi Makinde for deeming it fit to assemble the best of men for his administration, seeking the indulgence of the House to consider Oyewo’s rich CV and vast experience in academic and public service to confirm him as commissioner.
Issue of chieftainship crises/tussle going on in the state was asked, before making him take his bow. But another lawmaker, Hon. Mustapha  requested the commissioner designated to shed more light on how to achieve a true representation of local government system in the state.
Oyewo responded in line with the constitutional provision of the country, penal code and criminal justice of the state. He  proffered some other solutions to the problems facing judicial system in the country, and Oyo State, suggesting  that a synergy should be worked out between the judicial arm and other government defence institutions. He dwelled more on local government system. He was then confirmed as Honourable commissioner of Oyo State.

Next was Prof Sangodoyin Daud Kehinde who was asked about the face of education of the state. He eulogized the school governing council set up my the last administration saying that it yielded the needed and positive results. He later drew parallel and comparative correlations on the success of Botswana education system to that of the Oyo state, reeling out ways of reviving the face of Oyo State education sector.

Barr. Olasunkanmi Aremu Olaleye, made a presentation of himself to the house and brief of his bio data.
The commissioner designate was asked to explain how he can use his past experiences in the state administration to navigate the state to the desired level and how to increase and improve the state IGR. He responded by citing tourism management as one of the way to augment the state IGR. And to achieve that, he said the state needs to improve its security level, good road network and many other things that will motivate tourists to visit the state. According to him, the state is a tourist state in all ramifications and it should make use of the opportunity. The ex-chairman of the Oyo State Independent National Electoral Commission, OYSIEC, he was asked to shed more light on how to conduct a free, fair and credible local government election in the state.
