The Court of Appeal in Ibadan has upheld Prince Moshood Gbolagade Akere’s position as the Mogaji (head) of the Akere Dynasty.
The judgment, delivered on Monday, November 25, 2024, by a three-member panel comprising Hon. Justice Y.B. Nimpar (Presiding Justice), Hon. Justice B.F. Zubairu, and Hon. Justice U. Onwosi, confirmed the legitimacy of Prince Moshood Akere’s appointment as Mogaji. The case, which was registered as Appeal No. CA/IB/27/2018, was brought before the appellate court by Prince Abdul Wasiu Okunola Akere, who had sought to challenge Moshood Akere’s installation.
Prince Moshood Akere was originally installed as Mogaji on December 19, 2016, by the late Imperial Majesty Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogungun Niso I, the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Following the installation, Prince Abdul Wasiu Okunola Akere approached the Oyo State High Court, seeking to nullify the appointment.
On June 29, 2023, the Oyo State High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Eni Esan, dismissed Prince Abdul Wasiu Okunola Akere’s claims and reaffirmed Prince Moshood Gbolagade Akere as the rightful Mogaji of the Akere Dynasty. The case was filed under Suit No. I/314/2017.
In his reaction to the appellate court’s decision, Mogaji Moshood Gbolagade Akere expressed gratitude and called for unity among members of the Akere Dynasty, both at home and abroad. He emphasized the importance of fostering harmony within the family.
