The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, has called for collaboration of stakeholders towards maintainance of road across the country.
FERMA lamented that despite efforts of the Federal government, Nigeria road is still in deplorable conditions due to lack of maintenance.
Speaking during the one day Critical Stakeholders Workshop, theme: Road Maintenance: Our Collective Responsibility, held in Ibadan, the agency reiterated the needs for Nigerians to contribute their quota towards maintenance of road across the country, saying that government alone can not do it.
The guest lecturer at the event, Mr Akinjide Sadiq, an Ibadan based legal practitioner said that one of the major problem facing Nigeria’s road is maintainance, there should be steady and regular source of funding for Nigeria’s road through tolling, properly managed and accounted for.
He noted that people should stop seeing toll fee as extortion or double taxation, but it’s meant for maintenance
Meanwhile, the Assistant Corps Commandant, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo State, Joseph Ojerinde said that Nigerians should be constantly orientated so that people can be aware of road maintenance.
“We have been working together with other stakeholders to form synergy because 90 percent of human activities take place on road.
“We all have to play our role so as to safeguard our roads, there should be better collaboration and understanding between stakeholders on road maintainance.”
