UNPAID SALARY: NANS To Protest In Ibadan Over Closure Of Institutions

Students across state-owned tertiary institutions in Oyo State, under the aegis of National Association of Nigerian students, NANS, have concluded plans to stage a mass protest in Ibadan, Oyo state on Monday, 15th October.

In a press release on October 13th, the Oyo State NANS JCC Chairman, Com. Moronkola Teslim said the association was protesting to call the attention of the state Government to the closure of state-owned tertiary institutions which has lasted for more than three months.

He said “Its sorrowful that despite our efforts to seek quick resolutions to the subvention crises which according to the state Government is the cause of the closure of our institutions, the problem still persists”.

He further stated that, the sole demand of the association was the immediate re-opening of all closed state owned tertiary institutions to save the future of the stranded students.

It was however gathered that some institutions across state have pledged solidarity and support ahead of the mass protest scheduled to hold on Monday.

Campus Reporter further gathered that the six tertiary institutions owned by the Oyo State government, is lamenting the non-payment of their full salaries and poor funding. They are: The Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo; The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki; and College of Education, Lanlate.

These schools embarked on a strike for several months last year due to the non-payment of their salary arrears and reduction of government subvention to the schools to 25 per cent.
