The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka has disclosed that the institution still needs the assistance of its entire alumni.
The VC made the plea on Thursday while commissioning the solar facilities donated by four alumni of the university to the Office of the Media Assistant to the VC, Mr. Sunday Saanu.
Saanu had earlier complained about the poor electricity supply to his office before four alumni of 1990 graduating set, including Hadrat Hameed Azeez, Adebowale Oyedeji both from Agricultural Economics department with Olu Odugbemi and Adenike Oduela Ajetunmobi from Agronomy department came to his rescue by jointly contributing money to procure the solar facilities.
“The current realities have shown that government alone cannot adequately fund education.
” This is the reason we shall continue to call on all our alumni not to abandon UI which made them by offering them quality education. Our alumni must continue to support us so that UI can continue to maintain its prestigious premier position, not only in Nigeria but also in Africa and in the world.
“This University needs a lot of things. Most of our facilities are becoming old and decrepit. They require replacements which demand huge resources. It is only when our alumni like these four donors come to our rescue that we can have respite,”the VC said while commissioning the facilities.
While appreciating those alumni who have been assisting the institution with various kinds of benefactions, Prof. Olayinka called on those who have not shown up to come back and check out their departments, faculties and the university with a view to knowing where they could help, stressing “our needs our infinite”.
