Sunday Dare, Ogbomoso-born Nigeria’s minister for youth and sports and his forty-two other colleagues have donated fifty percent of their March salary to fight coronavirus.
The decision of the ministers to make the donation was announced by the information minister, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, in a statement on Saturday.
In the statement, Muhammed said the donation will be coordinated by Gbemisola Saraki, the minister of state for transportation.
Mohammed quoted Saraki as saying it was a gesture to support the federal government’s effort in mitigating the spread of a virus that has killed thousands globally.
“This global virus outbreak will require nations, continents and smaller communities to pull together to contribute their resources and support one another” Gbemisola Saraki, the coordinator of the donation was quoted saying.
Mohammed added that Dare, the only Oyo State Citizen in the Federal Executive Council, and other ministers commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his leadership role in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
At the time of writing this report, the country has recorded 81 cases of the virus and one death. Three patients have recovered and have since been discharged from the hospital.
