Oyo State is losing a lot of money on a daily basis due to its poorly organized transport system, Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, the speaker of the House of Assembly has said.
Ogundoyin stated this on Saturday while speaking on the anniversary of his first year office on Fresh FM.
He explained that this, among others reasons, prompted the state government to collect loans to embark on the construction of bus terminals in the state.
According to him, “When you go to various garages within the town, you will see a situation whereby it is not organized. You will see a situation whereby there is extortion especially for the transporters.
“You will see a situation whereby the state government suffers in revenue that we are supposed to generate. You will see other underlying problems that we are facing. That is one problem that the bus terminals will eradicate.”
When asked whether spending N15 billion to solve this problem is worth it, he said, “You look at it like the N15 billion is money being thrown away, No. The N15 billion would be gotten back into the coffers of the state.
“A situation whereby NURTW are the go-to guys for remittance of revenue to the state that will be eradicated; why do you think NURTW are so violent and are ready to die in that position? Do you know how much NURTW actually make for themselves on a daily basis?”
He also noted that the park terminals will not only block the loopholes in the transport system in the state but also improve other areas.
“In the next couple of years, we are going to make that money that has been expended back and even more moving forward.
“This is how the developed countries operate and we now have to look at modules that have worked and we now have to implement it in our own local domain,”he added.
