The leadership of the Social Democratic Party in Oyo State has announced that the state governor, Seyi Makinde is scared of the party’s growing strength in the state.

The party’s leadership stated this on the heel of the cancellation of its grand rally scheduled to hold in Ibadan, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Speaking on the development that necessitated the cancellation, the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Folorunsho Lana, described it as one of the antics of the Makinde-led Oyo State government.

“We are once again surprised by the attitude of the Commissioner of Police in the state who has turned himself into an appointee of the state. In January, we duly informed the Police Force of our mega rally scheduled to hold at Mapo hall today and it was acknowledged.

“However, around 7am today, our campaign rally was canceled because the Governor has decided to hold his campaign today at the same venue. This is not the first time he is trying to undermine our party because he knows we are the only ones capable of unseating him,” the Ibadan-born politician explained.

He described the development as a gross abuse of power, noting that the “last minute cancellation is injurious to us as our people had traveled as early as 5:30 am to attend the rally. All our members had chartered vehicles and made sacrifices to make the rally a success. We know the antics of Makinde’s campaign and this is obvious in the bloodshed that has trailed the Governor’s campaign from Tede to Ibarapa.”

“We have decided to not hold our rally today to prevent disorder however we would report the CP to appropriate authorities for shedding the blood of our supporters.

“The rally will hold tomorrow as instructed by the Commissioner but anything that will prevent it from holding tomorrow will not be allowed as it would be blood to blood and flesh to flesh,” he added.

In her speech, the party’s senatorial candidate in Oyo North, Mulikat Adeola, said it was unfortunate that the rally was put off in the last minute, calling on voters in the state to troop out to Mapo Hall on Wednesday for the rally.

The chairman of the party in the state, Okunlade, claimed that Makinde was no longer relevant in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, because of what he described as anti-party activities of the governor.

He also claimed that the SDP had it from credible source that PDP might not field any candidate in the coming elections because they might be expelled soon.

Presidential candidate of the party, Adewole Adebayo, who called in during the event, said because of the relevance of Ibadan in the politics of the South-West, the rally was important to the success of SDP in the coming elections, wondering why the rally had to be cancelled despite fulfilling all conditions to hold it.

“We have people of good pedigree as candidates in the state. We believe in the support of the people. We have mobilized our people for the rally and it will still hold on Wednesday,” he said.

Among the party leaders at the event were the South-West chairman, Silas Alani: the state secretary, Michael Owokoya, Michael Owokoya, women leader, Ruth Taiwo, and the party’s House of Representatives candidate in Ibadan North-East/South-East, Deji Aboderin.

Meanwhile, efforts to get the reaction of the commissioner hasn’t been fruitful as at press time. Adewale Osifeso, spokesperson of the Oyo police command, has not replied chats sent to her WhatsApp.
