Against the criticisms that have continued to trail the planned selection of candidates for the local government election by Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, a former lawmaker, Bolaji Badmos has lent it support for consensus.

OYOINSIGHT.COM had reported how the party had constituted a 5-man committee to work on how the candidates can reach consensus to present candidates in the various local government and wards across the state.

Though the committee has been expanded to 12-man, this newspaper learnt that it was after the primaries earlier scheduled for last Thursday was cancelled.

Badmos, who represented Akinyele state constituency 2 in the Oyo State House of Assembly between 2015 and 2019, stated that the constitutions of all the major parties in Nigeria supports consensus as way of choosing candidates for elections.

While reacting to a statement by Okeogun PDP Youth Vanguard warning Makinde and other leaders of the party against imposition of candidates, Badmos revealed that the issue with APC then was a case of marginalization of other groups by the SENACO group which later led to the failure of the party in the 2019 elections.

Speaking exclusively with OYOINSIGHT.COM, Badmos explained that “The Governor was very right with that decision . It shows he is a good leader. Governor Seyi Makinde must have considered those who joined the party after the party’s congress. Remember there are members of the coalition parties from African Democratic Congress, ADC, Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, Social Democratic Party, SDP as well as decampees from other political parties. The party constitution allows it.

“The governor and the party should not be distracted. The governor has shown he is accommodating. So, he should be allowed to concentrate on his task of repositioning the state for the betterment of Oyo state citizens,” Badmos, who is now a member of the PDP, added.
