A member of the House of Representatives representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, Hon. Shina Peller, has congratulated Nigerians home and abroad on the occasion of the country’s 22nd Democracy Day anniversary.

This was contained in an official statement released by his Press Secretary, Kola Popoola, where the federal legislator charged all Nigerians to contribute their own quota as good citizens towards strengthening the country’s democracy.

The statement read in part: “It’s June 12, a significant day in our country’s political history, which marks Nigeria’s return to civilian and democratic rule after many years of military dictatorship.

Furthermore, Hon. Peller recalled that in the struggle to return Nigeria to civilian rule, many sacrificed their time, freedom, families and lives. He therefore urged all Nigerians not to let efforts and sacrifices made by these heroes of the country’s democracy be in vain.

He said: “As we mark this year Democracy Day amidst numerous challenges that our dear country is confronted with, we must recall that in the struggle to return Nigeria to civilian rule, many sacrificed their time, energy, freedom, family and lives; many lives were indeed lost to the struggle including that of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12 1993 Presidential election.

“So, we should always take note of the afore mentioned, and for us not to make efforts and sacrifices of these heroes of our democracy go in vain, we must all contribute our own quota individually and collectively towards strengthening our democracy.”

In addition, Hon. Peller said, “One of the best ways to achieve this is for patriotic Nigerians with great leadership skills and traits to get involved in our political system and change the narrative for better. We cannot continue to sit on the fence and lament endlessly about the maladministration of our country, we need to get involved. This is what Lead Generation Initiative (LGI) is striving seriously to achieve through its free Get Involved Leadership Training (GILT) and other numerous laudable programmes taking place across the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“We all have roles to play in ensuring that our democracy is improved on. Let’s start by being registered members of any of the popular or dominant political parties. This will enable us have a say on who emerges a presidential/ gubernatorial/National and State Assembly/LG chairmanship and even councillorship candidate of such political parties during primary elections.

“Another thing is to equip ourselves with our PVCs which will be very useful for us during the main elections. There are some of the important things that we need to do as our own way of strengthening our democracy which many people fought and died for. Once again, I wish everyone of us Happy Democracy Day, and please stay safe.”
