PRESS RELEASE: APPRECIATION TO OYO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY OVER ROTATIONAL CHAIRMANSHIP OF OORELOPE LOCAL GOVERNMENT’S TRADITIONAL COUNCIL
1. On behalf of the sons and daughters of Oorelope Local Government in Oyo State, the members of Idagbasoke Omo Igboho express our deepest gratitude for the diligent efforts in amending the Council of Obas and Chiefs Law (Cap 37) of Oyo State 2000, as outlined in the Further Amendments Bill 2025 by Oyo State House of Assembly. This amendment approves the rotation of the Chairmanship of the Traditional Council among the Ona-Onibode, Alepata, Onigboho, and Onigbope. Idagbasoke Omo Igboho is a socio-cultural group comprising all sons and daughters of Oorelope Local Government, regardless of political lineage or community affiliation.
2. This amendment demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and their roles in modern governance. It rectifies historical injustices done to exclude important traditional rulers and will enhance the effectiveness of the Council of Obas and Chiefs, promoting peace and stability in Oorelope Local Government Area. Notably, this arrangement is not unique to Oorelope, as similar practices are found in other Local Government Areas like Saki East, ATISBO, and Itesiwaju, which we highly commend.
3. The rotational arrangement of the Chairmanship among the four traditional rulers—Alepata, Ona-Onibode, Onigboho, and Onigbope—is a solution to a half-century-long supremacy tussle. This arrangement will usher in peace, tranquility, and development in the town.
4. We advise the government not to allow self-seeking individuals, particularly those from the group known as Ifelodun Omo Igboho, to undermine these efforts. This group has been used to promote division and unnecessary hatred among communities in the Local Government.
5. It is noteworthy that Ifelodun Omo Igboho’s recent meeting, held at Alepata’s palace with a singular agenda to condemn the rotational clause in the bill, resulted in a press release. This action clearly indicates that the group serves as an extension of Alepata-in-Council, working against the interests of other traditional rulers, and the peace of the town.
6. As a respected socio-cultural group in Oorelope Local Government Area, Idagbasoke Omo Igbhoho dissociates all sons and daughters of Oorelope from the divisive writings of Ifelodun Omo Igboho against the rotational arrangement. We hold the four traditional rulers included in the rotation in the highest esteem and respect.
7. We specially thank the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. E. A. Ogundoyin and the entire members of the House for correcting this age-long anomaly with wisdom.
Long live Oorelope Local Government Area! Long live Oyo State! Long live Nigeria!!!
