A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Hon. Wasiu Akogun, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, the national leadership of the party and House of Representatives members-elect to support the candidature of Hon. Olajide Olatubosun for the position of Speaker of the House, saying it would be in the interest of peace, equity and fairness.
Akogun, who, before the dissolution of local councils in Oyo State, was Chairman in Atisbo Local Government Area, made the appeal at the weekend, stating that apart from Olatubosun’s educational achievements, wealth of experience and competence, which qualify him to lead the green chamber, his candidature “offers the APC the opportunity to balance power sharing across religious lines and to have a temperate individual who can unite all parties to work with the executive arm of the government.”
He said: “We, the people of Oke-Ogun are using this opportunity to appeal to the national leadership of the APC to give Hon. Olatubosun the nod to lead the next House of Representatives.
“This will not only be fair and equitable, it will bring about a sound, robust and temperate House leadership, as Hon. Olatubosun, apart from having no moral baggage, is more open-minded and well-experienced to lead his colleagues at a critical time like this.”
Akogun, also advised the APC to back Olatubosun in order to strengthen the party in Oyo State which is a major stronghold of APC.
“It will be good if Oke-Ogun, where Olatubosun hails from, is considered for Speaker at this time, as the region has always been relegated to the background in terms of governance. It has no good roads, no tertiary institution, no federal presence, “he said.
The council chairman said Oke-Ogun gave President Buhari and the APC 100 per cent support in the presidential election, adding that he believes that the region, which has never produced the governor of Oyo State or any principal officer in the National Assembly, if given the Speaker, would have development and federal presence brought closer to it.
