A politician and author, Dr. Wale Okediran, has cautioned Governor Seyi Makinde against the reopening of schools in Oyo State.
OYOINSIGHT.COM reports that Governor Makinde ordered that all Primary 6, JSS3 and SS3 students in the state should resume on the 29th of June.
Makinde also announced that worship centres in the state should resume at 25 percent capacity
However, Okediran, in a statement made available to OYOINSIGHT.COM stated the reopening of Schools and worship centers in the state would worsen the rate of infection.
According to the gynecologist, “It is sad that Oyo state is planning to resume work and reopen schools and places of worship when the surge in COVID-19 is on a daily rise.
“Micra vehicles in Ibadan still carry up to 6 passengers while Okada riders carry up to 3 passengers. The use of Facemasks in the public is not being enforced.”
He wrote further, “The infection rate will obviously be worse when workers, schools and worship centres are reopened.
“China that recently relaxed its lockdown rules has now gone back to it after a huge spike in infection rates in Peking.”
“The state needs to heed the advice of the National COVID-19 task force to delay lifting the ban on lockdown until the infection rate subsides.
“Until the infection rate subsides, he should open schools. This is the standard global practice. Moreover, lifting the Lockdown will increase the rate of community spread and we don’t have enough facilities to cope in case of massive infection. It’s better to delay reopenings than expose more people to danger,” he added.
