Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North/South/Oriire federal constituency, has said that the need to make intending parents experience the joy of parenthood, and have access to a clear, supportive legal framework made him sponsor the surrogacy bill.
The young lawmaker made this known via his social media Thursday night.
According to him: “Today, on the floor of the House, led the debate on the ‘Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigeria Surrogacy Commission and Other Related Matters, (Establishment), 2024, HB, 1137. This marked the second reading of the Bill, which seeks to establish the Nigeria Surrogacy Act and a Commission for the regulation, monitoring, and supervision of surrogacy arrangements in Nigeria.
“The essence of this Bill is to provide protection for all parties involved in surrogacy, ensuring proper coordination of the critical legal components throughout the surrogacy journey.
“This Bill is especially personal to me, and my dearest wife, and many other parents whose children are the result of surrogacy. I truly understand the significance of this alternative conception and birth process for families, especially in our ever-evolving world. I am delighted to sponsor this Bill, with the hope that intending parents can experience the joy of parenthood, and have access to a clear, supportive legal framework.”
His wife, Hadiza, who shared the post on her instagram, commended her husband for the bill, saying “I am so proud of my husband for pushing the surrogacy bill through the house.”
