A call has gone to government at all levels to increase investment in agriculture so as to ensure food sufficiency and at cheaper cost to the citizens.
A former house of representatives’ member, Adedapo Lam-Adesina, made this call when speaking with people before the distribution of a trailer load of Rice to the people of Ibadanland.
According to the son of late former governor Lamidi Adesina, government must do something urgently as people are finding it hard to have three square meals daily.
“This fasting period has afforded me the opportunity of discovering some things. It has enabled me to interact more with people and what I have seen baffles me as a person. We need to develop plans, especially about agriculture and youth development.
“And it is very urgent. I deliberately bought a trailer load of rice and other edibles, thinking it will, at least, take people for few days, coupled with what others would offer them. It was a miscalculation. There is nothing we buy that will go round.
“Efforts should be directed towards agriculture and government should make agriculture attractive”.
“Farm estates should be created with all amenities that can be enjoyed in the city while incentives and security should be provided for those who wants to farm.
“There should be off-takers from the beginning, By doing so, government is using a stone to kill two birds— ensuring food sufficiency and providing job opportunities.
“Our people in the main city have turned to social vices as a means of survival. We all have a duty to rescue them if we want to continue to live in peace. It goes beyond preaching,we must be practical. It isn’t all of them that don’t want to work. They have to be meaningfully engaged.”
Lam-Adesina, who represented Ibadan North East/South East federal constituency between 2015 and 2019, assured that his Omo Oloore Foundation will not stop at anything to assist these people.
“We have plans for skill acquisition programmes. It is not about those who are lettered alone. Our brothers and sisters on the street will be encouraged to come acquire skill and we will empower them with needed tools, after we are satisfied with their expertise in their chosen skill.”
The All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain also tasked fasting Muslims and Christian faithful to extend love to the needy, adding that the society would be better for it.
