The Vanguard for the Defence of the Rule of Law (VDRL) has condemned the display of opulence at the opening ceremony of the so-called Oyo State @ 50 Anniversary.

The organization in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oogunbamiwo Ogunmodede, noted that as the state celebrates its 50th anniversary, the people are left wondering why scarce resources are being squandered on extravagant jamborees amidst biting economic hardship.

According to VDRL, the Seyi Makinde administration’s decision to throw a lavish party for this milestone feels like a cruel joke on the struggling masses.

“While we acknowledge the state’s rich cultural heritage and potential, this celebration is a stark reminder of the government’s misplaced priorities.

With many Oyo State citizens grappling with poverty, unemployment, and crumbling infrastructure, lavish spending on anniversary festivities is an affront to their suffering. As leaders, isn’t it time to redirect resources to pressing issues like fixing roads, funding education, and improving healthcare?

“Instead, we’re treated to empty rhetoric and photo ops, showcasing a government disconnected from reality.

“The people of Oyo deserve better than this circus. They’re crying out for jobs, security, and basic amenities, but get a costly jamboree. This isn’t leadership; it’s a dereliction of duty.

“Seyi Makinde’s administration has consistently shown a callous disregard for the plight of the people, prioritizing white elephant projects like the #65Billion Naira Giver never House renovation over public welfare.

“What’s the cost of this extravaganza? How much is being spent on venues, travel, and entertainment? Transparency demands answers. Oyo State’s coffers aren’t a personal piggy bank for politicians to splurge. This profligacy must stop.*

“As Oyo State turns 50, we urge the Makinde administration to course-correct. Channel resources into tangible development projects that uplift lives. Abandon this needless jamboree and show some respect for the struggling people. Enough of profligacy; let’s focus on prosperity. The clock is ticking. The people are watching,” the group wrote in the statement.
