As I seek to lead our noble Association, the Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA), I am driven by a long-held passion for the publishing industry. Since my journey in book marketing and publishing began, I have admired the association’s mission and contributions to the growth of the industry. My aspiration to lead the NPA is not accidental; I have been nurturing this dream for a long time, and everything I have achieved in my career has been a deliberate step towards preparing myself for this role.
My recent PhD in Publishing and Copyright Studies, with a focus on the sales and marketing aspects of book publishing, has equipped me with the knowledge and expertise necessary to drive positive change in the industry. My intention is to apply this knowledge to enhance the practice of book publishing, protect and empower book publishers, and contribute to the development of the Nigerian education system.
The founding fathers of our reputable Association laid a solid foundation, creating a unifying umbrella for book publishers of all formats. Successive presidents and executives have worked tirelessly to bring the NPA to its current height. As a prospective leader, my goal is to build on their legacies and create a more robust platform for book publishers.
To achieve this vision, I have outlined several strategies. Firstly, I will work with stakeholders to advocate for the removal of Customs duty on printing papers, materials, and relevant consumables. This will increase the capacity of book publishers, encourage local production, and discourage importation.
Secondly, I will lead the fight against book piracy by working on the establishment of anti-piracy desks in all 36 states and the FCT Police Commands. This will facilitate collaboration between the police and the Nigerian Copyright Commission.
Thirdly, I will prioritize capacity building for CEOs and publishing staff through local and international training programmes. This will ensure that Nigerian book publishing moves in tandem with global digital trends.
Additional reforms that I plan to implement include facilitating robust relationships between NPA and Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
I undertake to stop arbitrary charges on book review exercise by the ERC with the cooperation of members.
I will also ensure that CEOs’ meetings are held quarterly, as stipulated in our constitution. This will enhance strategic planning, improve communication and collaboration, and increase transparency and accountability.
To enhance our electoral process, I will introduce an electronic voting system for subsequent elections, ensuring a free and fair process. This will increase members confidence in the process.
As president, my office will focus on policy issues, while the Secretariat handles administrative tasks. I will lead by example, working collectively with my team to move the NPA forward for the benefit of our esteemed members.
A vote for Dr. Sunday Obiyinka is a vote for professionalism, a step in the right direction to lead the association to progress and excellence.
He is indeed a round peg in a round hole.
