Profile Of 32-year Old Ashamu, Makinde’s Youngest Commissioner Nominee

Nurudeen Ashamu hails from Ile Onisapa Compound of Agunpopo area of Atiba local government area of Oyo.

Born in 1987, he is a transaction lawyer trained in the United Kingdom and Nigeria with solid experience in commercial law, foreign investments, taxation, labour law, banking and finance law, free zone regulation, arbitration as well as civil and criminal litigation.

As Company Secretary and Head of Legal at Abuja Technology Village, he is a member of Management, has overseen a number of projects and has been involved in complex negotiations involving investments worth tens of millions of United States Dollars. He has structured multi-layer Investment Transactions, drafted and reviewed Development Agreements and Legal Opinions in areas of real estate construction, finance and compliance.

 

Prior to this, Nurudeen cut his teeth in Nigerian legal circuit at top commercial law firm Babalakin & Co., where he was part of the team of lawyers in a number of arbitral proceedings, most recently an arbitration involving the Federal Government of Nigeria leading to an award of approximately N52 billion in favour of the client. He regularly advised local and international clients on diverse aspects of Nigerian law and represented firms operating in the capital market in various margin trading disputes involving billions of Naira before all superior courts in Nigeria, as well as other tribunals and was also involved in the negotiation of very complex commercial transactions on their behalf. Nurudeen has also been part of teams that successfully defended electoral returns in Nigeria at both the Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.

 

While in the UK, Nurudeen has visited and spoken at the House of Lords and the Privy Council In Different capacities. He was an Ambassador of Kent Law School, speaking to less privileged and ethnic minorities about higher education and the study of law. He is also the recipient of the  prestigious Duke of Edinburgh award, in recognition of his leadership and service to the community.

 

Nurudeen attended the University of Kent, UK graduating with an LL.B. (Hons.) degree and obtained a Masters of Law degree from University College London (UCL), University of London, UK. He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Law Society, UK and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), UK.

His mother, Sen. Monsurat Sunmonu, was speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and represented Oyo Central between 2015 and 2019.
