The candidature of Idayat Adekunbi Olaniyan Olorode, as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the Oyo East/Oyo West state constituency seat has come to stay, says the party’s women leader in Oyo west local government, Rasidat Adekunle.
In a statement made available to OYOINSIGHT.COM titled Obinrin Lokan; It is women’s time, Oyo State PDP women clamour for more women in governance, she said “the good people of Oyo East/West State Constituency thank the people’s Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde for the confirmation, adoption and approved nomination of Hon Alhaja Idayat Adekumbi Olaniyan-Olorode at presidential lodge, government House in Ibadan right in the presence of Oyo Federal Constituency PDP stakeholders.
“His Excellency promised and affirmed while addressing PDP stakeholders in Oyo state at an enlarged meeting that he will ensure that, at least, a female candidate emerged for State House of Assembly election in the three senatorial districts in Oyo state to ensure gender balance equitably. Women have never had it good except during Late Lam Adesina administration when Oyo Assembly had three women in the House; subsequently it was one woman at piece during late Alao Akala administration all through late Isiaka Ajimobi periods.
“Oyo Federal Constituency viz a viz Oyo Central Sanatorial District has met the set criteria in nominating a female candidate to meet the desire of our amiable Governor with the popular slogan of Obinrin Lo’kan.
“Under this present administration, governor Seyi Makinde in his goodwill and proactiveness has emphasized the need to have 30-35% of his appointments be given to women, and he dod similar thing for the youths. The Head of Service, MRS Amidat Ololade Agboola, has been handling the affairs of the state since 2019, and youths such as Commissioner of youths and sports (Seun Fakorede) to say but a few. These have shown clearly that the governor Seyi Makinde works his talks.
“But all is about to be truncated by those who see themselves as been too powerful than the governor or wiser than he could be, whilst their record shows otherwise. We were by no means small when godmother ascended the mantle of leadership of the Oyo State House of Assembly and her rapid growth in the politics of Nigeria. As a woman, one would expect that her historic ascendance in politics over the male politicians would foster great opportunities for women. Our own godmother being very vocal in her calls, supported another female Senator (Senator Abiodun Olujimi) who moved a motion for equal rights for women in Nigeria (SB 301: Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill, 2016), which was later denied passage after first and second reading. Question now is: Why would she support and labour for such bill to be passed and now be stumbling block for the successful practicalization of what she preached. Or was it that she never expected any other female politician to be bold as to wrestle power with the male counterparts.
“We must understand that our females in the society and indeed politics are as vibrant as their male counterparts and should be given a chance and supported by every other female.
This was just as she quoted the state woman leader, Wulemot, during her courtesy visit, as saying the candidature of Hon. Idayat Adekunbi Olaniyan Olorode has come to stay.
She quoted her as saying that the governor, in his goodwill, has affirmed that 30-35% women inclusion in government remain.
“We must understand that the days of “Amala politics” has gone and Oyo State is moving forward and better too. Borrowing from the sayings of the elders: olójú kogbọdọ lajúlẹ̀ kí tàlubọ kòsí (one must not be wide awake and allow calamity to strike him/her), it’s best time for the stakeholders of the great PDP and the government to give support to female aspirants for an inclusive government. Few females that have muscled up to contest must not be trampled upon by some powerful politicians in the society. Example of such is presently being played in the Oyo East and West State Constituency, where the credibility of a female aspirant -Hon. Adekunbi Idayat Olaniyan-Olorode, that was unanimously picked to represent the constituency is about to be taken away from her. What else do they want? She’s a female and a youth. But it becomes disdainful to know Hon. Adekunbi Idayat Olaniyan-Olorode is been attacked by another female, the godmother.
“The future promised to the youth and indeed female is now. Let’s think about it this way: When you train a lady/woman is like you have trained a whole community,” she said.
