Oyo APC Crisis: Why Are We Desperate For The Soul Of A Party In Shambles? | Ademola Solalu

Conscience is an open wound, only the truth can heal it. I feel it is highly expedient for me to express my view on the ongoing efforts at rebuilding the All Progressives Congress, APC in Oyo state. If the truth must be told, the recent accusations and counter accusations by different power blocs within the party are enough testimonies to the fact that majority of the gladiators are yet to learn from the mistakes of the past.

For me, I don’t know the reason for all the desperation for the soul of a political party that is in shambles. Of what use is a ticket that cannot get you anywhere?

To me, what we are witnessing is not about anyone being aggrieved again because we have passed that stage. It appears to me that all the interest groups talking are just trying to outsmart one another.

I am aware politics is about struggle for power. However, there is a need for a political party to put machineries in place to guarantee internal democracy. This is very important and non negotiable. Even, the electorates will not reckon with any political party that is not fair, just and equitable to its members.

Let me at this junction commend the national caretaker committee of the APC on its initiative to conduct a fresh membership registration. This is a step in the right direction and it will greatly assist in rebuilding Oyo APC.

Moving forward, the national caretaker committee should adopt the following as the way out of the crisis within the party.

1. Conduct a transparent membership registration exercise.

2. All members should be allowed to elect the executives from wards to the state.

3. A situation where party positions are shared by different power blocs must be discouraged. In fact, it is the reason for all the accusations and counter accusations.

4. Anyone interested in party position should emerge from his or her ward through popular participation of members.

5. In short, I am proposing direct primary model for election of party officials and delegates.

We need to also talk about the reward system in the party. I have observed that the desperation by political gladiators to go for elective positions is as a result of the inability of the party to have a reward system to cater for all aspirants who are unable to clinch party tickets.

In Oyo state for instance, there are 50 elective positions and it has always been winner takes all.

A situation where the person who emerges as the governor would be the one appointing SSG and commissioners with little or no imput from the party must henceforth be discouraged.

The party must give hope to members that they also have a stake in the governance of the state. There are many unelective positions that can be given to party members to compensate them.

Besides, there are other lucrative patronages that can be extended to party faithful that will make them happy.
