OBITUARY: Lekan Are To Be Buried At Saint David, Kudeti

The late foremost agronomist, businessman and PUNCH director, Dr. Lekan Are, will be buried on Friday, February 21, 2020.

In a statement sent to PUNCH by the family, on Friday, Are’s funeral will hold between February 17 and 21.

Are, aged 86, died about 12:30 am on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, after a brief illness.

According to the statement, activities for the burial would start on February 17th.

His lying-in-state is scheduled to hold on February 20 at Lekan Are Hall, Government College Ibadan, from 1pm to 3pm, and night of tributes will follow by 6pm at the same venue.

“On February 21, there will be a procession from GCI to Aboderin compound, Oke Are, by 8 am.

“At 11 am, the burial service will hold at the Cathedral of Saint David, Kudeti. Interment follows immediately at the church premises,” the statement added.

The deceased, the longest-serving director on the board of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, was the Chairman of Kakanfo Inn and Conference Centre, Ibadan; a former Chairman of University Press Plc; director, WEMA Bank; a pioneer General Manager of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority; and a proud son of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Born on December 2, 1933, Are had his secondary education at Government College Ibadan and studied at the University of Ibadan for a degree in agriculture.

He later travelled to the United States for further studies and earned a master’s degree and a PhD in agronomy.

In his lifetime, Are was a former president of the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association and a Trustee of the association.
