Makinde Orders Fresh Selection Process for Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile Stool

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has ordered a fresh selection process for filling the vacant stool of the Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile stool.

Recall that the stool has remained vacant since April 7, 2022, following the demise of Oba Abdulyekeen Ayinla Oladipupo IV.

But in a letter dated October 16, 2026, signed on behalf of the Executive Chairman of Oriire Local Government, William Jare Idowu, JP, the council notified the prominent ruling houses in Ikoyi-Ile of the governor’s directive that the administrative process for filling the vacant traditional stool should commence afresh and be made all-inclusive.

The directive is expected to pave the way for qualified candidates from all recognised ruling houses in Ikoyi-Ile to participate in the selection process for the prestigious traditional institution.

The decision to make the process all-inclusive is reportedly linked to the absence of a certified Oyo State Government Gazette establishing the succession arrangements for the Onikoyi Chieftaincy.

Traditionally, four major ruling houses are associated with the Onikoyi stool in Ikoyi-Ile. They are the Oladipupo, Adegun, Adesite and Ojo Atoyebi ruling houses.

So far, about six prospective candidates from three of the prominent ruling houses have reportedly indicated interest in participating in the selection process.

The governor’s directive has reportedly sparked celebrations in Ikoyi-Ile, with residents, including youths and elders, expressing appreciation for the attention given to the long-vacant traditional stool.

Many residents are hopeful that the fresh process will provide an opportunity for the emergence of a new Onikoyi, bringing renewed leadership and traditional representation to the ancient town.

The development is expected to draw considerable interest from the ruling houses and other stakeholders as the community looks forward to the successful completion of the selection process and the eventual emergence of a new traditional ruler.

The people of Ikoyi-Ile now await the next steps in the process that will determine the successor to the revered Onikoyi stool.
