The brand new Executive Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde is a man who is passionate about the game of golf. And like all passionate golfers, he is quite humble and down earth. This is evident even in his style of governance. At least three times in a week, you are sure to see the Governor walking the lush course of the Ibadan Golf Club from 6.30am to see through a snappy 18-hole game before dashing to his desk by 10 am.
His playing partners most times are his personal assistant, Seye and the spirit behind the Sahara Engineers, Eng. Adigun. Makinde does not only play golf, he is equally engaged in golf sponsorship. Yearly, he sponsors the multi million naira Seyi Makinde Women Support Group Golf tourney.
Since the Ibadan course is his home turf, the Governor has stopped at nothing to ensure that the course is well groomed. Recently, he donated 20,000 dollars worth of equipment like the Fairways and Green movers to ensure the Ibadan course remains lush through all season. Aside golf, this humble go lucky man who believes he can achieve anything has got other styles weaned in sheer fairytales.
Born in December, 1967, had been on a roll, starting crude oil business quite early in life. No wonder when he was coming in as Governor, he declared a huge asset worth N48 billion. He is about the only Nigerian Governor who doesn’t stay in the Government House nor drives in official government vehicles. He lives in his personal sprawling mansion at Ikolaba, GRA, Ibadan and has among his fleet 10 personal GMC Jeeps usually on his official entourage. What is more, Makinde collects N100,000 as monthly salary and directs the remaining sum be forwarded to pensioners in the State. What a life!
