The Oyo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Tuesday revealed that a total of 142 road traffic crashes and 70 death were recorded by the command in the third quarter of 2020.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mrs Uche Chukwurah, who revealed this while briefing journalists on the activities slated for 2020 African Road Safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, explained that the state recorded more road crashes in the third quarter which was in July and September than 112 crashes recorded in the second quarter of the year under review.
She explained that the increase was due to rainy season and lack of impatience by road users because of the upliftment of the restriction on movement
“We recorded 142 road traffic crashes, the number of vehicles involved was 230, number killed is 70 , number injured is 389 and we are able to rescue 364 alive and the total number of people involved is 823.
” Overspending accounted for major cause of road crashes during the period and followed by wrongful overtaking and tyre bust,” the sector commander said.
She pleaded with motorists to desist from the use of tokubo tyres, saying more lives can be saved if they use brand new tryes.
Speaking on the activies slated for 2020 African Road Safety Day and World Day Remembrance for road traffic victims., she said there would be Jumat Service on Fridsy and Church Service on Sunday to pray for the victims of road crashes, injured and families who lost loved ones.
Chukwurah further said that the command would pay a visitation to the hospital to identify with those who sustained some degree of injury and candle light walk on Saturday.
