Hon. Olorunpoto Cephas Rahaman, member representing Oyo East/Oyo West State Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, has said the late Ajibola Afonja was a mentor to me.
Afonja died last night at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.
“Two weeks ago, I was at Baba IDS’s residence when I received calls about the arrest of some Iseke (Oyo) indigenes over land and boundary disputes between the Iseke and Awe communities. In his usual manner of addressing issues, especially those important to Oyo town, Baba and I went to the police station and initiated discussions with the Alaawe in Council to find amicable resolutions.
“The next day, Saturday, March 4th, Baba had extensive discussions with the Elepe in Council over the land dispute issues, making significant recommendations at his Ogburo Compound office.
“On Thursday, he called me, emphasizing the need to swiftly complete our ongoing water project at the Oyo State High Court premises, Aawe Junction, Oyo. That was the last time I spoke to my father, mentor, leader, and teacher. He was deeply involved in my journey, using his influence among both the elites and the locals to galvanize support for me.
“At 82, he still had big dreams, generating and pursuing transformation-driven ideas. He nurtured me and planted the spirit of service in me. Baba was a complete patriot, a model to everyone who cares about development and making positive contributions to the progress of Oyo. His dedication and passion for the betterment of our community were unparalleled. Life dealt me a big blow with his passing. I have lost one of the greatest gifts life has given me. Rest in peace, Akano Gudugba, Prince Sulleiman, Alarape, Ajibola AFONJA.”
