Barely few days after secondary school students unleashed mayhem in Ibadan, Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that his administration’s commitment to improving education sector has been yielding positive results.
The governor stated this on Friday while inaugurating the Governing Councils of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, and the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan.
A statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju in Ibadan, the state capital, on Saturday, quoted the governor as saying that the state owned one university and a half when he took office in 2019, but the state is now the sole owner of three universities, which are doing well in their own rights.
“So, this shows that when we say education is one of the major pillars of our administration, we are putting in the work to improve the sector. From basic to tertiary education, we have made substantial progress in the past six years in the state.”
The Governor’s declaration on the state of education is coming just few days after the Police Command in the State arrested 59 students of Government Technical College, Orita-Aperin, for attacking and destroying property at Ibadan Christ Apostolic Grammar School.
“Destroyed properties included vehicles, the school laboratory, and some teachers were injured during the attack,” the Commissioner of Police stated.
He added that 17 of the 59 arrested students were found culpable, while the remaining students have been released without charges.
“When I interviewed them on Saturday, I was shocked by the riot. The level of decadence in schools across Oyo State is alarming,” he added.
