Experts To Dissect Energy Poverty In Oyo State As Jericho Businessmen Club Hosts 2nd Annual Socio-Economic Summit

Disturbed by energy poverty which has continued to hamper growth and development and as part of its own contribution to the knotty issue, this year’s edition of the Jericho Businessmen Club’s socio-economic summit will be centered around how to power Oyo State for industrialization and economic development.

Key stakeholders such as government officials, international development partners, captains of industry, entrepreneurs, and traditional leaders from Oyo State, making this summit a significant gathering of decision-makers and influencers are expected at the event.

JBC is a leading business club of accomplished entrepreneurs, technocrats and businessmen of Ibadan origin committed to fostering economic growth and sustainable development in Oyo State. Established in 2000, JBC has been at the forefront of driving impactful socio-economic initiatives and engaging in constructive dialogue for the
betterment of Ibadan.

Billed for Friday, 15th November 2024, at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Agodi, Ibadan, chairman of planning committee of this year’s event, which is the second edition, Kunle Afolabi, FCA, in a statement, said it will also explore solutions for sustainable electrification, leveraging both conventional and renewable energy sources to drive industrial growth and economic prosperity.

Afolabi added that “the discussions will center on improving energy infrastructure, promoting renewable energy, attracting investment, and shaping effective energy policies.”

According to him, “Engr. Adeoye Fadeyibi, expert consultant adviser to the board of IBEDC, who would be the keynote speaker, will provide expert insights into the opportunities and challenges of sustainable energy solutions in Oyo State, while there would also be two engaging panel sessions. The first one would dwell on conventional energy solutions – a deep dive into strategies for upgrading and expanding energy infrastructure, focusing on on-grid and off-grid power solutions, gas integration, and community-led initiatives. The second one is on renewable energy innovations – exploring the potential of renewable sources like solar, hydro, biomass, and wind to meet Oyo state’s energy needs, while reducing
reliance on fossil fuels.”

Afolabi added that new to this year’s summit is the youth innovation challenge, designed to empower young innovators and students from Southwest Nigeria. “Participants will present innovative
solutions in clean energy, rural electrification, and sustainable power, fostering a culture of
innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth.

Prominent figures like Governor Seyi Makinde and minister of power, Oloye Adebayo Adelabu are expected to grace the event. Apart from delivering the opening remarks, Makinde would share the state’s vision for sustainable electricity and
industrial development. Adelabu would elaborate  on the Federal Government’s reforms, policy initiatives and actions towards a vibrant and
sustainable power sector.

Afolabi commended JBC’s sponsors like First Bank, UNIDO, Channel 8 Premium Hotel, and Nigerian Breweries, for being committed to driving sustainable energy and economic progress in the region.

Highlight of the event would a showcase of cutting-edge solutions and products from energy and
allied industries which will hold alongside the summit. There would also networking opportunities for entrepreneurs, government representatives, and private sector leaders to connect and explore partnerships.
