EXCLUSIVE: How Pro-Sunmonu Councillors Were Axed— House Leader Impeached, 3 Others Suspended For 6 Months

    The crisis between Monsurat Sunmonu, a former speaker and senator and the chairman of Oyo East local government, Saheed Arowosaye took another turn on Tuesday, resulting in the impeachment of the House Leader and suspension three councillors loyal to the senator.

    OYOINSIGHT.COM understands that the crisis had started immediately after the national assembly elections when Arowosaye and other leaders in the council aera accused Sunmonu of anti-party activities and sabotaging the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the four Oyo federal constituency local government areas.

    Following the crisis which has drawn proxy agents in the councillors loyal to both politicians, a local PDP committee led by former speaker Wale Atiloa was set up. Efforts to resolve the matter were unsuccessful. Sources told OYOINSIGHT.COM that Sunmonu reportedly insisted Arowosaye must be impeached.

    “So, it was after the failure of the Atilola-led committee that ‘Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, intervened and directed his closest ally, Seye Famojuro meet with the councillors.

    “Otunba, as Famojuro is popularly called, invited the 10 councillors for state intervention and resolution at a meeting scheduled for this morning. But the four councillors loyal to Sunmonu refused to attend allegedly on her instruction but the six others who are with Arosad attended.

    “The impeachment of the House leader and the suspension of three other councillors in the former senator’s camp followed the meeting at the state level. The impeachment exercise took place at the council chamber and with the clerk in attendance,” added the source.

    Apart from the house leader, Ademola Okunade Idowu who was removed and suspended, other three councillors who were axed are Olayinka Saheed Olatunde (02), Adebayo Saheed (07) and Abd’Wasiu Mustapha (08). They are suspended for for 6 months over allegations bothering on gross misconduct, abuse of office, high-handedness and anti-party activities.

    At a plenary presided over my majority leader, Lasisi Kazeem (03), five other councilors who supported the leader’s removal and colleagues’ suspension were Adeniyi Asimiyu (01) who was later replaced Idowu as house leader; Aboderin Musa Akala (05), Ayesebotan Yusuf (09), Rasheed Mumini (04) and Adebayo Akinkunmi (06).
