Account Of Stewardship Series: The Environment | Idris Lapade (Lapido)

The devastating floods of August 2011 in which 11 lives were lost and property worth over N300m were damaged was the major factor in us initiating the observance and enforcement of environmental sanitation hours every Thursday morning when i took office.

The unhealthy sanitary condition of most areas in the local govt due to illegal waste disposal was a major issue that had to be tackled .

The huge success of this initiative taken by my administration led to the Governor, His Excellency Late Sen Abiola Ajimobi ,declaring each Thursday as an environmental sanitation day in Oyo State when he paid a visit to Ibadan North Local Government in the early days of our administration.

Other environmental projects done during our tenure includes:

1.Beautification of the road median from Bere,through Yemetu,through Bodija to UI.

2.Clearing of all the drainage that had been blocked for years,at Bodija market, Agbowo area,Oje,Sabo etc.
3.Desilting of drainages throughout the 12 wards to clear the irrigation channel.
4.Building of male and female toilets,with motorised boreholes, at all the major markets in the local govt, Bodija,Mokola, Sango and Gbaremu markets.
5.Employment of 300 widows and other women as street sweepers, they were paid daily, thereby creating employment for them.
6,Dredging of streams at Bodija,Agbowo and Sango.
7.Construction of 40 big bins, skip bins, which were compatible with the refuse truck, skip eater, for quick picking of refuse round the LG. They were located everywhere around the local govt.
8.Purchase of 3 medium size refuse trucks.
9.We held several enlightenment programmes for our people to know how and where to dump their refuse.
10.We cleared most of the heavy cow dung at Bodija market and the heap of refuse at Sango market, both had been there for many years.
Finally, we ensured that all the major roads in Ibadan North LG were clean at all times with Hon Lapade going round for on the spot assessment each week.
