Taiwo Adisa, the chief press secretary to Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, has revealed why his boss did not conduct election into local council development areas.
OYOINSIGHT.COM understands that unlike the administration of his predecessor, late Abiola Ajimobi, Makinde only conducted election into local government areas.
Adisa, who was fielding questions from Aanuoluwapo Omorinde on BOTTOM LINE, a political programme on IBR 92.5fm Ibadan over the weekend, “you can recall the constitution of Nigeria and check the section that contains names of local government areas in the State and the number, you see 33 in Oyo State and when a judgment comes and the parties to that judgment are 68 and then, the supreme court gave an order in line with its historical process not necessarily looking at the details of what was filed and what was not filed just to make a statement because that judgment only looked at whether state governments have the power to sack chairmen or not. The judgment never looked at whether we have 68 or 33 local governments in Oyo State but in the constitution, we have 33 and it is given that the supreme court of Nigeria cannot give an unconstitutional judgements and so, the government of Oyo State has to go by the constitution of Nigeria in making its own calculations which is 33”.
“When you say LCDAs, the ruling of the supreme court also follow historical basis as stated clearly that creation of LCDAs is incohate as far as there is no supplemental or passage of a law by the national assembly and so, there is no state government that has gone through that process. Lagos state took it to one of the sessions in the national assembly but it did not pass and so, the matter went to supreme court and on the basis of that, it ruled that the creation of LCDAs at the level of Lagos state is incohate. Every state government that has set up LCDAs followed the process of Lagos meaning that you are also running around the incohate judgment of the supreme court. So, as far as we are concerned, calling Oyo State and calling 68 local government, you are running foul of the law. We stand by 33 local governments in Oyo”.
