Oyo State Government under the leadership of Engr Seyi Makinde has completed Phase 1 of 11MW Hybrid power solution Independent Power Project (IPP).


The Independent Power Project is a public-private partnership between Oyo State Government and Elektron Energy. The initiative which aimed to boost power sufficiency in the State to drive economy.

According to the Oyo Government, the completed Phase 1 of the project is 5MW will go live to serve key sectors of the State before the end of 2024 while the Phase 2 of 6MW will kick off immediately.


Further breakdown showed that the 11MW Independent Power Project comprises of 10MW gas-fired solar solution which will be supplied by the ongoing Shell Gas Pipeline project.

The IPP will serve as the main power source for the tribrid power system of the Light Up Oyo Project under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

According to Oyo Government, the IPP will serve the energy needs of the various infrastructural facilities in Oyo State like; The Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, 12 healthcare facilities, including Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital and State Hospital, Ring-Road, The Judiciary Complexes at Iyanganku and Ring-Road, The Oyo State Secretariat and the House of Assembly and a selection of Schools within a defined catchment from the generation plant at the Oyo State Secretariat.


Earlier, Governor Makinde had earlier stated that the Oyo State IPP is a key initiative of his administration to address and fullfil the energy needs of the state.

He added that additional strategies aimed at achieving energy sufficiency in Oyo State include installing solar-hybrid mini-grids in rural communities and the Oyo State-Shell Nigeria Gas project.

“The Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Law also creates a law regulatory commission that will be in-charge of the generation, distribution and transmission of electricity in Oyo State.

“We are also taking steps towards ensuring improved electricity supply with sound policies and seeking investors into energy sector in Oyo State”.
