The OnaAka family of Oyo town has charged the Alaafin, Oba Akeem Owoade to rescind his appointment of Alhaji Oyedokun Sulaiman as the new OnaAka of Oyo town.
The family made the declaration in a letter this week signed by their legal representative, Olagoke Esuola, made available to OYOINSIGHT.COM.
According to the letter, the appointment can’t stand because it has no basis in the chieftancy of the state.
The letter read:
“I hereby write as Solicitor for the entire Royal/Chieftaincy Family of Ona Aka Alaafin, Agunpopo, Atiba Local Government Area, Oyo, Oyo State and I have their firm instruction to humbly seek the attention of Your Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, the Alaafin of Oyo and make these demands.
“Kabiyesi, the Ona-Aka Alaafin, Agunpopo were shocked to receive via Social Media, the purported appointment of a certain Alhaji Oyedokun Sulaiman Akinade of Ona Aka, Alalubosa, as Ona Aka of Oyo. The said letter was signed by Engr. Lookman Adebayo, the Chief of staff to the Alaafin of Oyo and dated the 12th January, 2026. This strange appointment is coming several months after the “Letter of Intention to fill the vacant stool” of Ona Aka Alaafin dated the 5th May, 2025 and addressed to your Imperial Majesty. The said letter also included the name of Prince Stephen Adebayo Afolabi from the Olaotan-Adesokan ruling House of Ona Aka Alaafin, Agunpopo as the ratified nominee of the entire family (A copy of the said letter is hereby attached to this letter).Not only that, the list and names of the Past Ona Aka in present Oyo were attached to that letter and they are attached to this too.
“Most humbly Sir, all the Past Ona Aka Alaafins were from the Ona Aka Alaafin Compound, Agunpopo safe for the last one, who died in 2022. The appointment of Late Chief Samuel Adebayo Adeoye from Ona Aka Alalubosa by the Late Alaafin, H.I.M Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, and not backed by any history or precedent and it will be wrong to allow such to become the norm. Late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III admitted his mistakes but pleaded with Ona-Aka Alaafin Agunpopo Family that it should regarded as a sort of “compensation” to the Ona Aka of Alalubosa. However, the family of Ona Aka Alaafin, Agunpopo is unwilling and refusing to allow that deliberate attack on their heritage and history to continue.
“In addition, the Local Government Traditional Councils in Oyo State specifically listed Ona Aka of Oyo under Atiba Traditional Council ?(Page B7). There is no mention of Ona Aka under Oyo East Local Government Council or any other Council in Oyo Town. The said Law containing the councils and the members of Traditional Council are hereby attached for your perusal and Consideration, Sir.
“To this and, we appeal that you withdraw and rescind, the Appointment of the said Alhaji Oyedokun Sulaiman Akinade of Ona Aka Compound, Alalubosa as New Ona Aka of Oyo as doing so would be a direct assault and distortion of our history and also against the law as promulgated. Thus, we pray that you approve the nomination and appointment of Prince Stephen Adebayo Afolabi from Olaotan Adesokan ruling House of Ona-Aka Alaafin, Agunpopo (whose turn it is to produce the next Ona-Aka).”
