The wave of Park Management Method blowing across the south west is an indication that the region holds true federalism in high esteem. Gradually, we are informally entrenching in states what’s been difficult to entrench in formal settings like the National Assembly.
Away with NURTW! The national union is not serving beneficial purposes except to grant financial empowerment to touts and miscreants at the detriment of Nigerian youths whose sensibilities have been corrupted that being a tout in a motor park assures them of quick richness than ‘wasting’ their minds acquiring knowledge in tertiary schools. Is it not a sad irony that NURTW do not construct or repair roads plied by their members and on which they collect huge, unaccounted for revenues? If NURTW must remain, it must remain to survive on what the park managers at the local governments deem to remit to their coffers.
Commercial motor parks across the local governments in Nigeria must be sources of regular revenues to develop the grassroots. Let state governors desist from interfering in revenue collection at motor parks since it’s constitutionally the duty of the local governments to do so. This is the reason local government autonomy should be allowed to fly.
Let each state allow their local governments to build, manage, collect revenues from parks and give states what’s due to them. Local governments can thrive on what they will make as revenues from managing parks. It will also create more employment in the councils while the existing council workers will cease staying idle since there will be work for them to do.
