Five local government council aspirants under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have dragged the party to court over the recently concluded primaries in the state.
The aspirants — Kelani Abdullahi, Fagbemi Temidayo, Babalola Asimiyu, Jinadu Ibrahim, and Oyeleke Oyeniyi — in a suit filed at the High Court of Justice in Ibadan are seeking “a declaration setting aside any list of candidates for the offices of Chairman and Councillors in Oyo State compiled through handpicked” by the 2nd defendant — Alhaji Kunmi Mustupha, PDP state chairman — and 3rd defendant — Wasiu Adeleke, PDP state secretary — “without any valid primaries as envisaged by the constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party and Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).”
They also seeked for an injuction restraining the State Independent Electoral Commission from accepting any list of candidate without the conduct of primaries by the party.
OYOINSIGHT recalls that the primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the Local government polls in the state has been trailed withoit multiple allegations of malpractice and imposition of candidates.
These allegations have raised concerns among party members, especially aggrieved aspirants about the respect for internal democracy within the state chaoter of the party.
