Following yesterday’s Supreme Court judgement overruling states’ hold on local government, chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in Oyo State, Michael Okunlade, has said Governor Seyi Makinde’s lack of good intention for the state.
Okunlade, who once represented Orelope state constituency, said the judgement will go along way in bringing smiles to the faces of people, imploring the federal government to scrap state independent electoral commission, SIEC.
“After years of being under the control of the Governor Seyi-led administration, the local government in Oyo State is now finally free! This judgment will reveal the governor’s lack of good intentions for the state.
“The local governments under the administration of Governor Seyi only exist on paper. It’s unfortunate that in the last five years, there has been no meaningful development in the local government.
“Unfortunately, the citizens have fallen for his machinations, manipulation, conspiracy, and plot to drain the state of its resources.
“The state has been under severe control, underscoring the need for everybody to support this judgment to reclaim the local government from bondage of this administration. This will enhance meaningful development at the local level.
“We also appeal to the federal government to abolish the state independent electoral commission so credible individuals can take over the local government.
“It’s absurd that the local government under this administration has been reduced to nothing. The elected chairmen are like a puppet on strings. Political appointments at the local level are being distributed like sacrificial rams without any input from community leaders,” he added.
