Workers of the six state owned tertiary institutions in Oyo State have written Governor Seyi Makinde to demand the implementation of the new minimum wage.
The workers, through the Joint Action Committe of all trade unions in the six institutions made the demand to the governor
in a letter made exclusively available OYOINSIGHT.COM.
“We write to inform you of our members’ impatience and mounting tensions among staffers of the state owned tertiary institutions over none conclusion and non implementation of consequential adjustment, to salaries as a result if the new national minimum wage.
“Your Excellency sir, since the negotiation committee had its inaugural meeting on 6th July, 2020, no other meeting has been held. All concerted efforts made by JAC to return the committee to Negotiation table have not yielded any positive results as the Committee insists on securing the Governor’d approval before any other meeting could hold.
“Sir, the other workers in the public sector had started receiving the minimum eage since January 2020. The workers in tertiary institutions are watching them enjoying this while they are in the same marker facing the same forces.
“Your Excellency, this situation has JAC helpless and the entire workforce in the state restless while the pressures are mounting on the Union body to take actions that would bring succor to them. No explanation could assuage the feelings of discrimination of staffers who are the only workers not getting consequential adjustments in the state,” the letter read.
They also noted that even though the state government has a worker friendly posture, “our understanding and patience with this government is turning into appendages of government in the eyes of public and our members.”
They called on the government to urgently return to the negotiation table and start the implementation of the new minimum wage.
