Some commercial vehicle drivers have announced their decision to stop working to protest the ‘illegal’ extortion of their hard earned money by the chairman of the park management committee in the state, Alhaji Mukaila Auxiliary.
The drivers, who ply the Beere – Omi Adio axis of the state, explained that the amount the government ordered them to pay on a daily basis is three hundred naira.
However, they revealed that Auxiliary and some of his boys have insisted that they must pay one hundred naira at every unit in the morning and in the afternoon on a daily basis.
This, according to them, will be equivalent to at least N1,400 daily because there are about seven units between their take off point and their destination.
One of the drivers, Wasiu Adewale who spoke with OYOINSIGHT.COM, also revealed that Auxiliary had initially paid them a visit at their garage to inform them that they must pay only three hundred naira daily only for some of Auxiliary’s boys to come and tell them they must pay the extra one hundred naira at every unit in the morning and evening.
“Yesterday morning, Mr Auxiliary came to inform us that the state governor has ordered that we must pay the park manager due of three hundred naira daily and we do that regularly.
“However, after that some guys who claimed to be Auciliary boys came to inform us that we must pay N100 in the morning and afternoon at every unit between Beere and Omi-Adio which is seven and we must still pay the initial #300 the government ordered us to pay.
“We now disagreed that we can’t because we earn a very little amount daily and our own children too must be successful.
“We now called them for a meeting to reach a peaceful resolution on the matter but upon their arrival to Beere yesterday with their thugs they started beating all of us.”
He stressed that after beating them, Auxiliary boys took one of them named Alfa Coach Kehinde to Mapo police station and locked him up as a scapegoat.
He also noted that when they decided to go on a strike to express their displeasure, police officers told them not to do so because it would only result in more suffering for their member who had been locked up.
He added that when they went to the police station to bail their member who was detained, police officers told them to pay fifty thousand naira to bail him but after they disagreed the amount was reduced to ten thousand naira.
“Auxiliary and his boys also told us that whether we like it or not, we must pay the new amount because the current administration is an ungodly one,”he added.
They then urged the government to come to their aid because they are ready to pay the three hundred naira but can’t afford an increase.
