Concerned about the killing of a student of Ajayi Crowther University, ACU, Alex Timehin, by his colleagues, a retired army captain, Akinjide Kazeem Akinola, has urged ‘Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state to wade into matter and bring perpetrators to justice.
Akinola made this known in a personally signed statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to him, the case must not be allowed to be swept under the carpet as justice must be served to prevent future occurrence.
“I am disturbed about the whole event. I cannot fathom how students of such an institution can descend that low to kill their colleagues. From Friday night to Saturday morning, the boy was tortured and nobody can report to the management and the authorities of the institution aren’t aware. That shows many things— the institution is not fit to be called one while the students they are raising can later in life become monsters.
“It is beyond expelling the suspects and handing them over to the police, the governor should make sure the school is penalized. They don’t have the facility to train decent and God-fearing students. Even if the killed student had committed the offense he was alleged of, the right challenge would have been to report him to the appropriate quarters
“By resorting to self-help, they have killed the hope of one family and many people. He is dead. The case should be not be treated with kid gloves. From the beginning to the end, it should be well investigated. The 12 people arrested aren’t enough. The school has a case to answer. Those handling security and managing the hostel have case to answer. That is the only way to console the family.”
Akinola urged other higher institutions of learning across the country to learn from the incidents and move swiftly to prevent occurrence.
