IWD 2020: Ajimobi, Sunmonu, Akinjide, Adefope, Alli, Ajibola… — 10 Females Breaking Barriers

The international women’s day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year around the world and it is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights. It is also a day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

United Nations described it as a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

To celebrate the 2020 edition of this event OYOINSIGHT.COM’s Adebayo Abdulrahman researched and gathered the profile of ten women in Oyo State who are breaking barriers in their chosen field or profession against all odds to prove that men and women should be treated equally in the society.

FLORENCE AJIMOBI

Born on the 5th of April, Florence Ajimobi is the wife of the immediate past governor of Oyo state Abiola Ajimobi. She is an alumnus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan where she studied secretarial studies.

She is the founder of several humanitarian projects such as Access to Basic Care (ABC) foundation, Ajumose Food Basket, Educate A Rural child among many other projects through which she has improved the standard of living of the less privileged, provide basic medical care, increase the literacy rate and championed the call for gender equality.

 

MONSURA SUNMONU

Born on the 9th of April 1959 in Oyo, Oyo State, She had her primary and secondary education at Children’s Boarding School, Oshogbo and Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo State respectively. She later attended the Holborn Law tutors for her LL.B.

She rose through the ranks to become a senior member of the British Government before leaving to contest a seat in the Oyo State House of Assembly in an election she won under the platform of the (now defunct) Action Congress of Nigeria.

On the 10th of June 2011, she was nominated to become the speaker of the legislative arm of government in the state and became the first female speaker in the history of Oyo State House of Assembly.

On the 28th of March Sunmonu was elected as the senator representing Oyo senatorial district at the National Assembly, a victory that made her the first female senator to represent Oyo State in the red chambers and second from southwestern Nigeria. She lost her re-election bid in February 2019 to Teslim Folarin of the All progressive congress.

While at the national assembly, she was an active member who was vocal on various issues including women’s rights, grazing reserves, corruption, education, climate change, and infrastructure.

JUMOKE AKINJIDE

Born on the 4th of August, 1959, she had her primary and secondary school education in Ibadan, Oyo state before proceeding to Kings College, London and Harvard Law School where she bagged her first and second degree in law respectively.

Jumoke Akinjide who is a member of various local and international professional bodies was made the Special Assistant to Mr. President on FCT matters (2001-2002) G77 and Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (2002-2003).

The former managing partner of Akinjide & Co. was appointed the Minister of State for FCT by Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 where she contributed immensely to the development of satellite towns and area councils.

MULIKAT AKANDE ADEOLA

Mulikat, as she is fondly called by her supporters, is a two-time member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbomosho North, South and Ordre Constituency between 2007 and 2011. She is a graduate of law from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the University of Lagos where she bagged her first and second degree respectively.

While at the National Assembly she served as the majority leader of the green chambers between 2011 and 2015. She lost her bid to become a senator to Fatai Buhari of the APC in 2019.

The former banker is a philanthropist who has used her wealth to cater for the welfare of others in the society.

TOLULOPE AKANDE SADIPE

Born in 1966 to the illustrious Akande family of Ibadan, She holds a B.sc in Accounting from the American University, Washington D.C., the United States and a Masters degree in International Business Management from Southeastern University, Washington.

She has over thirty decades of experience in policy formulation, business analysis, strategy development and implementation, auditing, project management, development accounting, and human resource management.

She is an advocate of women and youth development, and gender equality. She also served as the Special Adviser to former Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Investment promotion and projects.

She is currently a member of the House of Representatives representing Oluyole federal constituency.    

WUNMI OLADEJI

Hon. Wunmi Oladeji is currently the only female member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Ogbomosho North constituency. She was re-elected under the platform of ADP due to her sterling performance in her first term where she initiated several bills and empowerment programs for her constituency.

She is a staunch advocate of gender equality and women’s participation in politics.

TARA ADEFOPE

Ms. Tara Adefope holds an LL.B degree from the University of Leicester and a Masters degree in corporate governance and business ethics from the Birkbeck University of London. She has worked with the International Finance Corporation – a member of the World Bank Group where she led Corporate Governance activities in Nigeria and Ghana.

She is currently the Director-General of the Oyo State Due Process office where she ensures due process in the discharge of government functions and contract awards in the state.

LOLADE AJIBOLA

25-year-old Ms. Ololade Ajibola is a graduate of the University of Ibadan where she studied sociology. She has volunteered with various non-profit organizations and worked with the ministry of women affairs and social development, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

She is currently the Special Assistant to Oyo state governor on Special Duties where she is charged with creating synergy between the various functional parts of the Governor’s team. She is an emerging symbol is the campaign for equal opportunity for women in politics.

ABIMBOLA ADELAKUN

Abimbola Adelakun holds a bachelors and Masters Degree in communication and language arts from the University of Ibadan. She is a Nigerian writer and the author of Under the Brown Rusted Roofs.

She is a journalist and columnist with the punch newspapers where she uses her works to demand accountability and transparency in public office.

TOLANI ALLI

Tolani Alli is the first-ever female documentary photographer to former Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State. She is currently the Special Adviser on Photography to the President in the office of the Vice President and the personal photographer to the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

In 2019, she won the future award Africa prize for photography. She is a published international documentary photographer and award-winning visual storyteller.
